How I Met Sam Part 10

I entered the hallway and saw lights on in my parents bedroom and the door wide open. I went to the door and saw a Chinese man with a long knife, and my parents on their stomachs with their hands tied behind them. I could not see their faces, and they weren’t moving. The Chinese man looked at me, and our eyes locked. I wondered why he did not respond to me in any way. Perhaps I really was dreaming. Perhaps I had died and these were my last visions on earth. Either way, I was glad he did not respond to my presence! (Later, I realised this was God’s protection of me – it was as if He blinded their eyes to my presence). The cries continued and I turned to the next room, where I knew I would find out what was happening.

Education Dilemmas

I try to keep my blog from anything too controversial - but I feel the need to vent on this matter...so here goes. I have decided, for various reasons to homeschool Priscilla (9) next year. Last year we decided to send Caleb (10) to a Christian Classical School (Clapham School). Up until that time they had always been in the public school which offered a Dual Language program, enabling them to become mostly fluent in Spanish. I realize that doing school differently year by year strikes some as odd and a bit non-committal. For us, we figure we will evaluate the needs of each child and the benefits offered by each method and the pros and cons and adjust accordingly. It doesn't seem to me to be such a bad idea. Kids change, character issues arise and certain educational choices may not fit as they once had. I guess sometimes I sense (for probably no apparent reason) that people look on me as an oddity - choosing different methods for my kids - now even venturing into homeschooli...

Thoughts on Love and Marriage

  It didn’t happen all at once, like in the fairy tales. By it, I mean love. Not what people think of when they think ‘love.’ Not the love that flutters the heart and weakens the knees. The love grew over time when the caught breath and hormonal impulses had found their proper place, behind the choice and mature yielding of the soul to another.  The man loved his woman until it ached. He got up each day, though weary and less than thrilled with his daily labours, and set out to win the bread for the home, wife, and children. The job was interesting on some level. It suited his gifts, a luxury to be sure. In the early days he had resented having to work. How much he’d rather fill his life with more meaning, more purpose, more self-pursuits. But he loved his woman, his family. He needed to serve their needs before his whims.
